For the better part of his life, Moto has been a detective in the NYPD. Born in Japan, he has made his adopted city of New York his home. A goodhearted man with traditional Japanese values, he keeps his deepest thoughts and his deepest regret-his estrangement from his only family, his daughter, Sachi-to himself. He focuses on his work and does his best to lead a good, if lonely, life. Almost every night of the week, April takes the stage in a blues club in Manhattan, taking solace from her past in the songs she sings. It's not the life she dreamed about, but she makes do, strengthened by the love of her daughter, Dani, her boyfriend, Angel, and her best friend, Sachi. When Sachi is brutally murdered on a desolate street in New York, Moto comes face-to-face with the world he lost his daughter to and in doing so, he meets April.
